Mt. Charleston is a peaceful retreat just 40-60 minutes from the busy streets of Las Vegas. The landscape quickly changes as you drive up, with pine trees, mountains, and beautiful meadows surrounding you. In the winter, it’s a popular spot for snow play, and there's even a ski resort on the mountain! In this blog post I will be sharing my top tips for a seamless Mt Charleston session, as well as sharing some of my favorite photos from Taylor and Brayden's engagement session in the mountains!

How to Prepare for Your Engagement Session at Mt. Charleston

Before heading up the mountain for your engagement session, there are a few important things to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

  • Limited Cell Service: Cell service at Mt. Charleston is spotty, so it's crucial to plan ahead. Make sure you have an exact pin location to meet your photographer, or consider driving together to avoid any confusion or delays.
  • Weather Variability: The temperature at Mt. Charleston can be much cooler than in the city, even during the winter months. Be sure to dress in layers and bring warm, weather-appropriate clothing to stay comfortable throughout your shoot.
  • Busy Weekends and Winter Months: Weekends, especially during the winter, can be crowded, and certain areas like the ski resort or Lee Meadow sledding area may be inaccessible due to heavy traffic. If you’re visiting on a popular day, you might need to plan extra time for travel.
  • Check the Weather Conditions: The weather can change quickly in the mountains, so always check conditions before heading out. Snowstorms or road closures could affect access to certain areas, so it’s important to stay informed and adjust your plans as necessary.

Preparing for the Cold – What to Wear for Your Snowy Session

  • Layering for Warmth and Style: When it comes to dressing for a snowy engagement session, layering is key to staying warm without sacrificing style. Cozy sweaters, scarves, jackets, and boots are perfect for creating a look that's both functional and fashionable. By layering smartly, you can ensure comfort while looking chic in your photos.


  • Complementing the Snowy Setting: To create contrast against the snowy backdrop, choose colors that stand out while still harmonizing with the scenery. Darker tones like deep browns, black, or forest greens work beautifully in the snow, providing contrast without clashing with the landscape. Stick to neutrals and avoid overly bright neon colors or extremely light shades that may blend into the snow and diminish visual interest.


  • Footwear & Accessories: When it comes to footwear, make sure to keep your feet warm and comfortable with closed-toe shoes, boots, or weather-appropriate sneakers.
